Poultney utilizes the town manager form of government for both the town and the village of Poultney. Informational meetings are held before each respective Town and Village election. These meetings allow voters to question budget and ballot proposals and candidates for town office. Actual voting takes place the next day and is by Australian ballot. The town meeting is held on the first Monday and Tuesday of May.
Operating government for the town is conducted through an elected Select Board consisting of five members with staggered terms. The Select Board meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Meetings are held at the town Office located at 9 Main Street and are open to the public.
Operating government for the Village of Poultney is conducted through an elected Board of Trustees consisting of 5 members with staggered terms of office. The Village Board of Trustees meets on the third Thursday of each month. Meetings are held at the Town Office located at 9 main street and open to the public.
The Village Manager is responsible for day to day operations of the village. This includes budget development and administration, road and sidewalk maintenance, the water department and the sewer department.
