Richard Heinberg: The Case for Resilience
September 15 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
In this talk, Richard Heinberg will explore community resilience as a key strategy for responding to the 21st century’s sustainability crises.
This presentation will begin with an update on major global trends of our time including climate, energy, food, water, population, and debt, showing their linkages in terms of reinforcing or balancing feedbacks. Taken together, these trends imply severe societal stress by mid-century. In recent years, resilience has become an increasingly popular concept—particularly in the response to the climate crisis. But what does building community resilience really mean? And what does it look like in practice. Richard will share some key lessons from the field of socio-ecological resilience and examples of how communities are already working to building resilience in terms of distributed energy, local ownership and investment, localized food systems, and resource conservation.
This talk will take place in Ackley Auditorium
