Citizen of the Year – Jonas Rosenthal

Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce, upon executive decision, is pleased to announce that its 2016 Citizen Award will be presented as a first-ever honorary citizen award. This first Honorary Citizen Award is to be presented to Jonas Rosenthal. Jonas, who briefly lived in Poultney village before relocating to a nearby community, has maintained strong ties to the Poultney community for more than three decades; both personally through involvement with his wife’s Poultney family, through his work and with many civic groups.

Jonas Rosenthal Jonas has been selected by the Chamber for numerous reasons witnessed, described and endorsed by many residents. For more than three decades, Jonas has done, and continues to do, many great things for the community of Poultney.  He was endorsed by several because, “Jonas devotes 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to the community.”  And that, “he lives in and for our community”.  It is known by all that “his embracement of the community and ownership of responsibilities through his jobs as Manager of both the Town and Village of Poultney have gone above and beyond that of anyone’s typical job.”.  Another endorsed Jonas because “he has been instrumental in writing, receiving and managing hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars for projects”.  Known for that exceptional record, he has been known as the go-to counsel by civic groups not under the scope of his managerial office duties and has provided counsel for their benefit. He has been a conduit for the people of Poultney for the benefit of its many businesses, ecclesiastical, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations including participation in many of their special events. These include, but are not limited to: Poultney Chamber of Commerce; Poultney Volunteer Fire Department;  Poultney Rescue Squad; J. Claire Carmody Post #39 American Legion, its American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion; Green Mountain College; Poultney Elementary School and Poultney High School; Poultney High School Booster Club; Lake St. Catherine Association; Poultney Rotary International; Poultney Woman’s Club; Poultney Revitalization Committee; Poultney Cemetery Association; Poultney Valley Snowmobile Devils; Poultney Fish and Game Club; Poultney Community League; Poultney Historical Society; Preservation Trust; Poultney Food Shelf; Young At Heart Senior Center; Poultney Town Band; Stone Valley Arts; Poultney Area St. David’s Society; Slate Quarry Park Group, LLC; Boy Scouts of America; and Poultney United Fund.

Never will Poultney citizens forget Jonas’ dedication to the Poultney community, its volunteers and to emergency services from far and wide, through his perseverance of community needs everywhere, following the July 3rd 2014 act of Mother Nature that caused extreme devastation throughout our beautiful settlement.

The Chamber’s Citizen of the Year Award, presented annually since 1990, honors a resident citizen who has made major contributions to the betterment of Poultney; has distinguished herself or himself through outstanding service to the community and typifies the true spirit of service and self-sacrifice in representing the finest ideals of Poultney citizenship – – a real “unsung hero” of Poultney.  As Poultney’s first-ever Honorary Citizen of the Year in this 2016 year of the Chamber’s award program history, Jonas will also be the Grand Marshal of the 2017 July 4th parade in Poultney.
