Located on the Vermont-New York border in the Lakes Region of Rutland County, Poultney is a lively and interesting community of about 3,600 people who live in the Village, Town, and Lake St. Catherine areas. It is the home of Green Mountain College, a four year co-ed Liberal Arts College focusing on environmental studies. While staying proud of and dedicated to preserving its historical charm and values, Poultney embraces the good parts of modern technology and life.

Poultney offers a high quality of life. You will find the old time values of honesty, integrity, mutual respect and community spirit well preserved here. They probably account for our very low crime rate. Recreational opportunities are also plentiful, making Poultney a popular tourist destination for nearly two centuries. Residents and visitors enjoy numerous outdoor activities.

The Village and East Poultney are both listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. The Poultney Historical Society offers guided tours of many of the important historical buildings; among these are the Union Academy dating to 1791, The Melodeon Factory built in 1840 and the 1896 Victorian school house. Poultney welcomes tourists, new residents and new businesses.

Poultney is specifically interested in attracting knowledge intensive firms. We also welcome people and businesses interested in starting niche retail stores. Poultney has an active Chamber of Commerce which supports year round festivals and events to stimulate retail business.

In 2002 Downtown Poultney was awarded status as a Designated Downtown Development District by the State of Vermont Downtown Development Board. The Poultney Downtown Revitalization Committee in concert with The Village of Poultney is implementing a long term program to restore the historic look and feel of the downtown Streetscape while enhancing the amenities of the area and revitalizing the economy.
